The Shih Tzu Dogs – Favorite Pets Of China Manchu Emperors
The dogs of the Shih Tzu breed are small sized, just from 8 inches up to 11 inches in height and weigh from 9 pounds up to 16 pounds. The Shih Tzu appear to be extremely beautiful dogs. It has a double coat – one long-haired luxuriant coat and the other soft and wooly. Because the lenght of the hair on their heads, that could cover their eyes, the owners must comb it into a top knot.
The Shih Tzu or the Small Lion (the Chinese meaning of its name), as it is popularly known, originates from Tibet. When learning about the history of the Shih Tzu, we see that it was a favorite pet of the Emperors of Manchu Dynasty of China around 19th century where they flourished. The dogs of this breed arrived at the imperial court of China as gifts from some tibetan monks. Their chinese name, the Shih Tzu, meaning in english the Tibetan Lions, is reffering to their resemblance to little lions, because of their brown, long-haired and luxuriant coat. At the end of the World War II, these dogs were brought to the United States by American soldiers, via the Great Britain, where the breed had been imported around 1930. People of both England and United States instantly accepted the breed because of the dogs’ beauty and friendly attitude.
Why Are the Shih Tzu Dogs Beloved By People All Around The World?
The dogs of the Shih Tzu breed are popular among the people from any country on Earth. They can only be happy if they are with someone or, at least, if people are around. They are basically dogs who need to be around someone and often become destructive and cranky if left alone for long periods of time. Without making any effort, everybody, people, dog or any other animal, can go along with a Shih Tzu dog, due to their calm and sweet temper. However, adults need to supervise small children when playing with these dogs in order that neither of them to be harmed.
At all stages of their live these dogs need to be frequently groomed, because they have two types of coat. The hair has to be combed daily to keep it from tangling and matting. Though they need frequent baths, they must not be exposed to humid environment as they can fall easily sick. Special attention is required for their teeth that start to fall in their middle ages.
Having short and flat faces, their breathing is troubled by wheezing sounds and they snor loudly. These dogs must not be overfed becose they are prone to obesity. They tend to become and behave like spoiled brats easily.
The Shih Tzu dogs are difficult to train because of their stubbornness. Owners need a lot perseverance to train them at home. Harshness has no effect on their training, you need patience.
As indoor dogs, they don’t need more than an apartment to live. They do not need too much exercise as such. But as many possible games, both into the house and outdoors. In order to understand this breed better, you will need to know as much about the Shih Tzu as possible. And a great part of their history waits to be discovered.
